950 Reddit Mentions, 306 Movers: Who Reddit Recommends and Who They Warn You About

We read every moving company discussion thread across six major city subreddits: r/boston, r/washingtondc (plus r/nova and r/maryland), r/LosAngeles, r/Atlanta, r/raleigh, and r/SanDiego. For each thread, we extracted every company mention with context: was it a recommendation, a pricing data point, or a warning? We recorded the author, upvote count, and specific details.

The result is 950 individual mentions across 306 different moving companies. Of those, 43 companies have at least one explicit red flag, meaning a Reddit user specifically warned others not to use them, described a negative experience, or flagged deceptive practices.

This is not a review aggregator. These are organic conversations between people who just moved and people who are about to.

These companies have the highest number of positive mentions across their local subreddit. The count reflects organic recommendations from consumers who used the service, not marketing or self-promotion.

Bookstore Movers (DC): 61 total mentions, 38 recommendations. The runaway leader. Based in the DC metro area, this company appears in nearly every r/washingtondc moving thread. Multiple consumers describe using them for repeat moves. Two red flags exist (one about blocking bike lanes, one bad experience), but the 38:2 positive-to-negative ratio is the best in the dataset.

Stairhopper Movers (Boston): 31 mentions, 22 recommendations, zero red flags. The most recommended mover in r/boston with no negative signal at all. Consumers consistently report the crew coming in under quote, 10% cash discount, and nothing damaged. Multiple repeat customers spanning years.

A-Anytime Movers (DC): 26 mentions, 17 recommendations. The second most discussed mover in the DC area. Two red flags (one about cost exceeding quote, one about communication), but the volume of positive signal is significant.

Gentle Giant (Boston): 20 mentions, 14 recommendations. The premium option in r/boston. Two former employees posted endorsements of the training standards. One red flag (damaged items, but compensated through insurance). Consistently described as the best option for high-value or hard-to-replace items.

Dogwood Moving Co. (Raleigh): 15 mentions, 14 recommendations. Near-perfect ratio for the Raleigh market. Zero red flags.

Loadstar Movers (Raleigh): 15 mentions, all 15 recommendations. The only company in the top 20 with a perfect positive record and double-digit mentions.

Real Rock N Roll Movers (LA): 13 mentions, 13 recommendations. The most recommended mover in r/LosAngeles. One consumer described a 2BR move for $500 with 2 movers in 3 hours.

JK Moving Services (DC): 12 mentions, 9 recommendations. One of the larger operations in the DC area, frequently mentioned for both residential and corporate moves.

Grizzly Movers (Raleigh): 11 mentions, all 11 recommendations. Zero red flags. Another Raleigh market standout.

Intelligent Labor and Moving (Boston): 9 mentions, 8 recommendations. Notable for a 6-move repeat customer since 2008. Publishes transparent hourly rates on their website with no minimums.

Across all 950 mentions, the most common reasons people recommend a mover are, in order:

1. Crew efficiency and speed. "They were machines." "Done in 3 hours flat." Consumers value movers who work fast because hourly billing means speed saves money.

2. Coming in under quote. Multiple companies (Stairhopper, NorthStar, Esquire, Raimond's) have reddit users reporting that the final bill was less than the estimate. This is the single strongest trust signal in the dataset.

3. Nothing damaged. In a market where damage complaints are the number one issue in FMCSA records, "not a single scratch" carries real weight.

4. Repeat usage. 23 of the top 25 companies have at least one consumer who used them more than once. Some have consumers who used them 3, 4, or 6 times. Nobody uses a mover six times if they are not genuinely good.

5. Former employee endorsements. Gentle Giant has two former employees recommending the company in r/boston threads. SOS Moving has one. These are rare and carry outsized credibility.

43 companies in our dataset have at least one explicit red flag from a Reddit user. Some are isolated complaints. Others reveal patterns.

All My Sons Moving and Storage leads the red flag count with 8 warnings across DC, Atlanta, San Diego, and Raleigh. The complaints are consistent: showing up late, breaking furniture, quoting one price and charging another, and refusing accountability. One consumer wrote: "Do NOT use All My Sons. I got completely scammed by them and they damaged almost half of the pieces of furniture they moved." Another: "Quoted me one price but charged more. Broke a bunch of stuff and said it was my fault."

Piece of Cake Moving (DC) has 4 red flags despite 11 total mentions. The warnings are severe: "Don't do it. They are horrific. They squeezed us for money and damaged a bunch of our stuff." And: "They'll haggle you for 20% tip per mover." The 3:4 positive-to-negative ratio makes this the most polarizing company in the dataset.

Mammoth Moving and Storage has 4 red flags with a consistent pattern: the final cost was 2 to 3 times the quoted amount. One consumer called them "sneaky with overcharging."

Platinum Movers has 3 warnings including an accusation of buying out bad reviews.

Safeway Moving Inc has 3 red flags describing a pattern of low quotes followed by warehouse delays and price escalation.

College Hunks Hauling Junk appears in both the recommended and warned categories across different cities. In DC, two users posted emphatic warnings ("For the love of God do not use college hunks"). In other markets, the reviews are more mixed. The franchise model means quality varies dramatically by location.

Three national franchise brands appear in both the recommended and red flag lists: College Hunks, Two Men and a Truck, and All My Sons. This is not a coincidence.

Franchise movers operate under the same brand but with independently owned locations. A College Hunks in one city might be excellent while another is terrible. The brand tells you nothing about the specific crew that will show up at your door.

The Reddit data makes this visible in a way that Google reviews cannot. A 4.5-star Google rating for "All My Sons" aggregates reviews across locations. The Reddit data shows that individual consumers in specific cities had specific negative experiences that Google's star rating obscures.

This is why local, owner-operated movers consistently outperform franchises in Reddit recommendations. When the owner is on the crew or directly manages every job, quality control is inherent.

Across the 43 warned companies, five patterns appear repeatedly:

1. Final cost significantly exceeds quote. The most common complaint. Companies that quote low to win the job and then add charges once your belongings are on their truck. "The total cost ended up being like 3x the quoted amount."

2. Damage with no accountability. Broken furniture followed by refusal to compensate, or offering pennies-per-pound instead of replacement value. One consumer had a $5,000 piece damaged and was offered $50.

3. Deliberately slow crews on hourly billing. Multiple reports of crews taking excessive breaks, dragging their feet, or bringing fewer workers than needed, all of which increase hours and cost. "They took 6 hours to do a job that should have taken 3."

4. Disappearing with belongings. The most alarming pattern. Multiple reports of movers loading a truck and then going dark for 24 or more hours before making additional demands.

5. Aggressive upselling. Wrapping items the consumer already packed, adding packing materials without asking, and adding fees for stairs, long carries, or heavy items that were visible during the quote process.

The gap between the best and worst movers in this dataset is not about price. It is about integrity. A $119/hr mover with zero red flags will almost always cost you less total than a $99/hr mover who pads hours and adds surprise fees.

The companies with zero red flags and high recommendation counts (Stairhopper, Loadstar, Grizzly, Dogwood, Intelligent Labor) share common traits: transparent pricing, efficient crews, and a pattern of coming in at or under quote.

The companies with the most red flags share a different set of traits: low initial quotes, aggressive sales tactics, franchise or multi-location structures, and a pattern of cost escalation after the truck is loaded.

Reddit is not a perfect source. It skews toward people who had strong experiences, positive or negative. But 950 mentions across 306 companies, spanning 15 years of conversations, produces signal that no single review site can match.
