Moving Companies That Offer Military and Veteran Discounts

Moving companies offer military discounts in several forms. The most common is a percentage discount on the total move cost, typically ranging from 5% to 15%. Some companies offer specific service add-ons instead: complimentary packing for one room, a free month of storage, or waived fuel surcharges.

The discount structure varies by company and is sometimes negotiable. Always ask for the specific terms in writing before booking.

Not all advertised military discounts are straightforward. Some companies advertise a military discount but inflate the base price, negating the savings. Others restrict the discount to specific move types or minimum distances.

Before booking, get a written estimate that shows both the pre-discount and post-discount price. Compare the post-discount price with quotes from other companies that do not offer military discounts. The discounted price should be competitive with or better than market rates, not just lower than the company's own inflated rate.

Ask what documentation is required. Most companies accept a military ID (CAC card), DD-214, or VA health card. Some accept first responder credentials for related discounts.

For Permanent Change of Station moves, the military provides a moving allowance and may arrange transportation through the Defense Personal Property System (DPS). Service members can choose a government-arranged move (GHC), a Personally Procured Move (PPM, formerly DITY), or a combination.

Military discounts from private movers are most relevant for PPM moves, where the service member arranges and pays for the move and is reimbursed by the government. In this case, a military discount directly increases the service member's net reimbursement.

For GHC moves, the government contracts with Transportation Service Providers (TSPs) and the service member does not pay directly, so company-offered discounts do not apply.

When contacting a company about military discounts, ask these questions.

What is the exact discount amount or percentage? Get a specific number, not 'we offer military discounts.'

Does the discount apply to the total move cost or only to specific charges? Some discounts apply only to labor, not materials or fuel.

Can the discount be combined with other promotions? Some companies restrict stacking.

What documentation do you need? Bring it to your in-home estimate if possible.

Is the discount reflected on the written estimate? If not, it does not exist.
