Moving Companies With the Best Safety Records: Zero Crashes and Clean Inspections
FMCSA tracks crashes and inspection results for every registered carrier. These movers have spotless records.
What FMCSA Tracks
Every interstate carrier registered with FMCSA has a public safety record. This includes the number of reportable crashes (accidents resulting in injury, fatality, or vehicle tow), roadside inspections, and out-of-service rates (the percentage of inspections where the vehicle or driver was pulled off the road for safety violations).
This data is available on each carrier's SAFER page and through the FMCSA's Safety Measurement System (SMS). It covers the most recent 24 months of activity.
What a Clean Record Means
A clean safety record means zero reportable crashes, zero out-of-service violations during inspections, and no conditional or unsatisfactory safety ratings.
For a large-fleet company, maintaining this record is difficult. More trucks on the road means more exposure to accidents, more inspections, and more opportunities for violations. A 50-truck company with zero crashes over multiple years is a stronger signal than a 5-truck company with the same record.
The companies listed below have 10 or more trucks, five or more years of operating history, and spotless safety records.
How to Check Any Mover's Safety Record
Go to safer.fmcsa.dot.gov and search by company name or USDOT number. The company snapshot shows the carrier's operating status, fleet size, and safety rating. Click 'Inspections' and 'Crashes' to see the detailed record.
You can also use ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/SMS to see the Safety Measurement System scores, which compare a carrier's performance to peers of similar size. Look for green (below average violation rates) rather than red (above average).
Why Fleet Size Matters
A one-truck company with zero crashes is less informative than a company with 50 trucks and zero crashes. The larger company has far more miles driven, more drivers, and more opportunities for something to go wrong. Their clean record reflects systematic safety practices, not just low exposure.
This list uses a 10-truck minimum to focus on companies where the clean record is statistically meaningful. Companies with fewer trucks may also have excellent safety practices, but the sample size is too small to draw strong conclusions.
Limitations of Safety Data
FMCSA safety data has gaps. Not all accidents are reportable (minor fender benders in parking lots, for example). Inspection frequency varies by state and route. Some carriers avoid routes with high inspection rates.
Additionally, safety data measures vehicle and driver safety, not customer service. A company with a perfect safety record can still overcharge customers, damage furniture, or miss delivery windows. Safety and service quality are separate dimensions. Both matter.
