Why This Data Exists

Every moving cost article on the internet gives you the same recycled range: a local move costs $800 to $2,500. That tells you nothing. It does not tell you whether the $800 was a studio or a 3-bedroom, whether the person packed themselves, or whether they moved on September 1st or in February.

We went through 50+ Reddit threads across three major cities where people shared exactly what they paid. We extracted 150+ individual price points with enough detail to be useful. Then we compared those against published rate cards from movers who post their hourly rates online.

Local Moves by City

Boston (32 data points): Studio $220-650, 1BR $500-1,200, 2BR $900-2,200, 3BR $950-4,300. Hourly rates range from $119/hr (Raimond's, 2 crew) to $305/hr (Gentle Giant, 3 crew). Self-packing cuts the price 30-60%. The September 1st lease cycle doubles rates.

DC Metro (35 data points): Studio $300-460, 1BR $500-1,320, 2BR $1,000-1,800, 3BR row houses $1,800-3,500. Row house access is the single biggest cost driver. Elevator reservations in Arlington high-rises add $200-500.

Los Angeles (40+ data points): Studio $330-800, 1BR $425-1,000, 2BR $700-1,400, 3BR $1,400-2,000. The app economy (TaskRabbit, Lugg, Dolly) creates a parallel market starting at $200 for minimal moves. Professional movers start at $100/hr floor for 2 crew.

The Three Variables That Actually Drive Price

1. Self-packing is the biggest lever. Full-service packing adds 2-3x to the cost. A self-packed 2BR Stairhopper move cost $1,500. A full-service packed 2BR Gentle Giant move cost $4,300. Same city, similar apartment sizes.

2. When you move matters more than which company you pick. Michael's Moving publishes five seasonal tiers. Their 3-mover rate ranges from $199/hr (discount) to $425/hr (hi-peak). That is a 114% increase for the same service.

3. Stairs and access add real cost. Multiple Boston consumers report narrow stairwells adding 1-2 hours. DC row houses consistently cost 20-40% more than equivalent suburban moves.

Cross-Country Moves

Full-service 1BR: $3,400 (Intelligent Labor, Brooklyn to Boston) to $11,500 (Gentle Giant, Boston to San Francisco).

Full-service 2BR: $12,000 to $16,000 (industry estimate from Safe Responsible Movers owner).

Published interstate rates from Michael's Moving: Boston to New York $2,299 (same day delivery), Boston to Florida $3,499, Boston to California $4,399.

Self-service alternatives: U-Pack trailer plus local movers on each end, Massachusetts to Texas, approximately $10,000 total including car shipping. PODS plus packing crews, Maryland to Boston, approximately $4,000 total.

Published Hourly Rates: What Movers Actually Charge

Raimond's Movers (Boston): 2 movers $119/hr, 3 movers $179/hr, 4 movers $239/hr, 5 movers $299/hr. 5% cash discount.

Intelligent Labor and Moving (Boston): 2 movers $195/hr, 3 movers $255/hr, 4 movers $315/hr. No minimum. Quarter-hour billing. Rush rates in August.

Michael's Moving (Boston): 2 movers $169/hr to $249/hr, 3 movers $225/hr to $425/hr depending on season. 3-hour minimum.

Los Angeles range: $110/hr (Splendid Moving, 2 crew) to $245/hr (premium tier, 3 crew).

The cheapest hourly rate does not always produce the cheapest total. Multiple Reddit users reported that faster, more expensive crews finished in fewer hours and cost less overall.

Cash Discounts and Timing Tricks

Stairhopper (Boston): 10% off for cash, confirmed by multiple Reddit users. Raimond's (Boston): 5% off for cash. Studio City Movers (LA): lower rates Tuesday through Thursday and for cash.

The midweek discount is real across the industry. Moving companies staff for weekend demand. A Wednesday afternoon move can cost 20-30% less than Saturday morning.
