The Cheapest Mover Isn't Always the Cheapest Move: Why Hourly Rate Doesn't Predict Total Cost

When consumers compare moving companies, they almost always compare hourly rates. Raimond's charges $119/hr for 2 movers. Intelligent Labor charges $195/hr. Michael's charges $169/hr. Gentle Giant charges $305/hr.

If you stop there, the decision looks obvious. But hourly rate is only one variable in the equation. The other variables, how fast the crew works, how many hours the minimum requires, and whether the final bill matches the estimate, often matter more.

A 2-bedroom Boston move takes roughly 4 to 6 hours with a 3-person crew. Here is what that looks like at different hourly rates:

Raimond's at $179/hr (3 movers): If the crew takes 6 hours, you pay $1,074. If they finish in 4 hours, you pay $716.

Intelligent Labor at $255/hr (3 movers): If the crew takes 4 hours, you pay $1,020. If they finish in 3.5 hours, you pay $893.

Michael's at $225/hr (3 movers, regular rate): At 5 hours, $1,125. At 4 hours, $900. But at hi-peak rate ($425/hr), 4 hours becomes $1,700.

Gentle Giant at $305/hr (3 movers): At 3 hours, $915. At 4 hours, $1,220.

The $179/hr crew that takes 6 hours costs more than the $305/hr crew that finishes in 3. This is not hypothetical. Multiple r/boston users reported that Gentle Giant crews finished faster than expected because of their training and efficiency. One former employee noted the company required crew members to run back to the truck between loads.

Stairhopper charges $160/hr for a 3-person crew. Based on hourly rate alone, a 5-hour move should cost $800. Here is what reddit users actually reported:

One consumer paid $800 for a 3-bedroom (quoted $1,200). The crew was efficient and finished early.

Another paid $650 for a studio to 3-bedroom move within Somerville, including getting a massive couch up narrow stairs and an antique dresser into an attic room.

A third paid $1,500 for a 2-bedroom Cambridge to Cambridge move, 3 guys, 5 hours. That matches the hourly rate prediction exactly.

The variation within a single company's reported prices is almost as large as the variation between companies. The crew you get matters as much as the company you hire.

Michael's has a 3-hour minimum including travel time. Intelligent Labor has no minimum. Raimond's does not state a minimum.

For a small move (studio, short distance), the minimum can be the entire cost. If your move takes 1.5 hours of actual work but the company has a 3-hour minimum, you are paying for 1.5 hours of nothing.

Intelligent Labor's no-minimum policy and quarter-hour billing means you pay for exactly the time used. On a small move, this can make a $195/hr company cheaper than a $119/hr company with a 3-hour minimum.

The math: a 1.5-hour move at $195/hr with no minimum costs $293. The same move at $119/hr with a 3-hour minimum costs $357.

The single largest variable in total cost is not the hourly rate. It is whether you pack yourself.

Gentle Giant charged $4,300 for a 2-bedroom move with full-service packing (the movers literally took silverware out of drawers and packed everything). The same company, for a furniture-only move of comparable size, was estimated at around $300 plus tip by an r/boston user.

That is a 14x difference for the same company because of one variable: packing.

When consumers pack themselves, the total cost compresses into a much narrower range regardless of company. Self-packed 2-bedroom moves in our Boston dataset range from $900 to $1,500 across all companies. That $600 spread is far smaller than the $3,400 spread between self-packed and full-service moves with the same company.

Several Boston movers have a documented pattern of final bills coming in under the original quote. This is the opposite of the bait-and-switch that characterizes the worst movers.

Stairhopper: Multiple reddit users reported paying less than quoted. One paid $800 versus a $1,200 quote for a 3-bedroom.

NorthStar Moving (LA): Came in slightly under quote both times, according to one consumer.

Raimond's: One consumer reported the actual cost was right on target with their quote with no hidden fees.

Esquire: Consistently described as having no hidden fees and transparent pricing.

This pattern matters more than the hourly rate itself. A $200/hr company that quotes $1,000 and charges $1,000 is cheaper than a $150/hr company that quotes $800 and charges $1,200.

Stop comparing hourly rates. Start comparing these three things:

1. Total cost estimates for your specific move. Get at least three quotes with the same inventory list. Compare the total, not the rate.

2. Minimum hour requirements. On small moves, this is often the entire cost. Ask every company what their minimum is.

3. The under-quote or over-quote pattern. Search the company name on Reddit. If multiple people report the final bill exceeded the quote, the hourly rate is irrelevant.
