We Tracked 32 Boston Moves from Reddit. Here's What Actually Drives the Price.

Every moving cost article on the internet gives you the same recycled range: "a local move in Boston costs $800 to $2,500." That tells you nothing. It does not tell you whether the $800 was a studio or a 3-bedroom. It does not tell you whether the person packed themselves. It does not tell you whether they moved on September 1st or in February.

We went through 15 threads on r/boston where people shared exactly what they paid, which company they used, how many bedrooms they had, whether they packed themselves, and how many crew members showed up. We extracted 32 individual price points with enough detail to be useful. Then we compared those community reports against the published rate cards from three Boston movers who post their hourly rates online.

The result is the most specific pricing dataset for Boston movers that exists anywhere.

The cheapest reported move was $220: a one-bedroom apartment, two movers, two and a half hours, everything pre-packed. The most expensive was $4,300: a two-bedroom apartment with full-service packing (the movers literally took silverware out of drawers), Allston to Somerville.

That is a 20x spread for moves within the same metro area. The price you pay has almost nothing to do with which company you choose and almost everything to do with three variables: how much you pack yourself, when you move, and how many stairs are involved.

The single most consistent pattern across all 32 data points is that self-packing cuts the price by 30 to 60 percent. This is not a small difference. It is the difference between a $1,400 move and a $650 move.

Safe Responsible Movers quoted a consumer for a Davis Square to Winter Hill move. The consumer packed everything themselves and moved the smaller boxes over several days in their own car. Safe Responsible cut the quote by almost two-thirds. The consumer paid roughly one-third of what a full-service move would have cost.

Gentle Giant charged $4,300 for a full-service pack-and-move of a two-bedroom. For the same size apartment with self-packing, Stairhopper charged $1,500. That is not because Stairhopper is cheaper per hour (Gentle Giant charges $305/hr for a 3-man crew, Stairhopper charges $275/hr for a 4-man crew). It is because packing adds hours, and hours are the unit of cost.

One r/boston commenter put it well: the quote for packing everything came out to almost three times the cost of just moving everything. Multiple other data points confirm that 2x to 3x multiplier.

Boston has the most concentrated moving season in America. Leases turn over on September 1, and the last week of August is the single most expensive time to hire movers anywhere in the country.

Intelligent Labor and Moving, based in Arlington, publishes exact seasonal pricing on their website. Their rates tell the story:

Three movers and a truck: $255/hr standard, $275/hr in August, $290/hr the last week of August through September 3. That is a 14% premium for moving during peak week.

Michael's Moving and Storage publishes five pricing tiers. Their three-mover rate ranges from $199/hr (discount) to $425/hr (hi-peak). That is more than double. A move that costs $1,200 in January could cost $2,550 in late August with the same company, same crew size, same apartment.

One r/boston commenter noted that at least some companies jack up their rates considerably, like almost 100%, in the last week of August. The published rate cards confirm this is not an exaggeration.

Boston's housing stock is old. Walk-ups with narrow stairwells are the norm, not the exception. Multiple data points show stairs adding meaningful time and cost.

Stairhopper (whose name is not accidental) charged $650 for a move from a studio up one easy half-flight to a three-bedroom up two flights of tight narrow stairs, including getting a massive couch through a tiny hallway and an antique dresser up into an attic room. The consumer called it worth every single penny.

Olympia quoted $7,000 for a three-bedroom house that included a workshop with light machinery, a home gym, and an outdoor play structure. The high quote was not about distance (Burlington to Lexington is 15 minutes). It was about the specialized disassembly and heavy lifting.

Truck access matters too. If a large truck cannot get down your street, the crew needs to shuttle with a smaller vehicle, which adds hours.

Boston movers charge between $119 and $305 per hour depending on crew size and company tier. Here is what three companies publish:

Intelligent Labor and Moving: 2 movers $195/hr, 3 movers $255/hr, 4 movers $315/hr. Additional movers $60/hr each. No minimum. Quarter-hour billing. No weekend or holiday surcharge. Increased rates in August and early September.

Michael's Moving and Storage: 2 movers $169/hr (regular) to $249/hr (hi-peak), 3 movers $225/hr to $425/hr, 4 movers $299/hr to $499/hr. Additional movers $70/hr. 3-hour minimum including travel time.

The cheapest hourly rate does not always produce the cheapest total. A faster, more expensive crew can finish in fewer hours. Multiple reddit commenters noted that their final bill came in under the quote because the crew was efficient.

X-Movers operates on a model most consumers do not know exists. You rent the truck yourself (through U-Haul or similar). X-Movers provides only the labor: loading, unloading, and careful handling. One consumer paid $500 to $600 for two hours of work.

This approach typically costs 40 to 60 percent less than a full-service mover because the truck rental ($50 to $150 per day) is far cheaper than the markup a moving company charges for their truck. The trade-off is that you drive the truck yourself and coordinate the logistics.

Several r/boston commenters also noted that U-Haul lets you add labor through their checkout process, connecting you with local moving helpers at competitive rates.

Studio: $220 to $650. Median around $400. Most data points involve 2 movers and 2 to 3 hours.

1 Bedroom: $500 to $1,200. Median around $650. Self-packed moves cluster at $500 to $700. Full-service moves push toward $1,000 or more.

2 Bedroom: $900 to $2,200. Median around $1,400. This is where self-packing makes the biggest absolute difference. The gap between a self-packed Stairhopper move ($1,400) and a full-service Gentle Giant move ($2,200 or more) is significant.

3 Bedroom: $950 to $4,300. The widest range. A self-packed Bunker Hill move cost $950. A full-service Gentle Giant move with packing cost $4,300. Both are legitimate data points for a 3-bedroom Boston move.

Cross-country from Boston: Gentle Giant quoted $11,500 for a 1-bedroom Boston to San Francisco, final cost $10,000. Michael's publishes Boston to New York at $2,299 (same day delivery), Boston to Florida at $3,499, Boston to California at $4,399. Industry estimate for full-service 2-bedroom cross-country: $12,000 to $16,000.

Stairhopper Movers appeared in 32 separate reddit mentions across 15 threads, more than any other Boston mover. The recommendations span years and consistently describe the same pattern: professional crew, came in under quote, nothing damaged. Multiple consumers reported using them more than once.

Gentle Giant appeared 20 times. The consensus: best if you have high-value or hard-to-replace items, but you pay for it. Two former Gentle Giant employees posted endorsements of the company's training standards. One noted that crew members were required to run back to the truck.

The third most mentioned company was Intelligent Labor and Moving with 9 mentions, including one consumer who used them for six moves since 2008. Their published pricing, transparent rate structure, and no-minimum policy were frequently cited.

No company in our dataset had zero negative mentions. Gentle Giant had one report of damaged items (compensated through insurance). Michael's had a report of a $5,000 furniture piece damaged with only $50 offered through basic insurance. The lesson: always get replacement-value coverage, not the default per-pound insurance.

Two companies offer documented cash discounts. Stairhopper gives 10% off for cash payment, confirmed by multiple reddit users. Raimond's offers 5% off for cash, published on their website. On a $1,500 move, that is $75 to $150 in savings for the payment method alone.
