What Reddit Actually Says About Movers: 654 Mentions Analyzed
We scraped and categorized every mover mention across moving-related subreddits. The signal is different from Google.
Reddit is where people talk about movers after the move is done, without the pressure of a review prompt or the social obligation of a Google review. It is unfiltered, anonymous, and specific. We analyzed 654 total mentions of 251 distinct moving companies across Reddit to understand what consumers actually say when they are talking to each other rather than to the company.
The Numbers
Across relevant subreddits (r/moving, r/personalfinance, city-specific subs, and others), we identified 654 mentions of 251 unique movers. Of those mentions, 440 were recommendations (someone actively suggesting a mover to another user), 56 were red flags (warnings or negative experiences), and 148 were pricing mentions (specific dollar amounts shared).
The recommendation-to-warning ratio of roughly 8:1 reflects Reddit's tendency toward positive signal sharing. People who had good experiences want to help others find the same. But the 56 red flag mentions are disproportionately detailed and specific, often including dollar amounts, timelines, and descriptions of exactly what went wrong.
Reddit vs. Google: Different Winners
The movers most frequently recommended on Reddit do not always match the highest-rated movers on Google. Reddit users weight different factors. They value: price transparency (knowing the final cost before the move), crew quality (the actual humans who show up), punctuality, and communication during the move.
Google ratings reward volume and recency. Reddit recommendations reward memorability. A mover needs to be good enough that someone remembers their name months later when a stranger asks for help. This creates a natural filter toward movers who made a strong impression through personal service, clear communication, or notably fair pricing.
What Reddit Users Complain About
The 56 red flag mentions cluster around specific failure modes: surprise charges at delivery (hostage-load pattern), crews that showed up late or not at all, damaged items with no resolution, and bait-and-switch pricing where the quoted rate bore no resemblance to the final bill.
Notably, Reddit complaints almost never focus on minor issues. A scratched table or a slightly late arrival does not generate a Reddit post. The warnings that appear are for serious failures, moves that went genuinely wrong in ways that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. This makes Reddit's red flag signal high-confidence even if low-volume.
The Pricing Signal
148 Reddit mentions include specific pricing information. This is valuable because moving pricing is notoriously opaque. Users share what they paid, for what size move, in which city, creating a crowd-sourced pricing database that is harder to game than company-provided estimates.
The pricing mentions confirm wide variance: users in the same city report paying anywhere from $400 to $3,000+ for similar-sized moves. The most common advice on Reddit regarding pricing is to get at least three quotes and to be skeptical of any estimate significantly below the others.
Using Reddit as a Vetting Tool
Reddit is most useful as a supplementary signal. Search the company name plus the city. Look for multiple independent mentions across different threads and time periods. A mover with three separate recommendations from three different users over two years is a stronger signal than a mover with 500 Google reviews.
The limitation: Reddit coverage is geographically uneven. Major metros (LA, NYC, Chicago, Austin, Denver) have robust moving discussion. Smaller markets may have little to no Reddit signal. In those cases, other sources become primary.
