Every Local News Investigation Into Moving Fraud (2025-2026)

Local news stations have investigated more moving fraud cases in the last 18 months than at any point in the last decade. The pattern is consistent: a consumer complains, a reporter pulls the FMCSA record, and the gap between what the company advertises and what federal data shows turns out to be enormous. Stations in Kansas City, Los Angeles, and New York have all done this work in 2025 and 2026. FMCSA, with a full-time enforcement staff and statutory authority over every company these stations covered, had not.

What follows is every documented local news investigation into moving fraud that Trunk has tracked and cross-referenced against federal records. They are organized chronologically. Where Trunk has published a deeper investigation into the same company or network, a link to that report is included.

Just after midnight on July 3, 2024, a truck bearing the VIP Moving Company name pulled up near 6th and San Pedro streets in Los Angeles and began unloading furniture onto the sidewalk in the middle of Skid Row. Video captured by OnScene.TV showed men handing out couches, a refrigerator, a BBQ grill, a keyboard, yard furniture, and a ping-pong table to anyone who could carry them.

All four major Los Angeles news outlets covered the footage. ABC7 identified the company as VIP Pro Moving, based in Marina Del Rey.

What the outlets found: VIP Pro Moving LLC (USDOT 3803920) is registered at a Marina Del Rey apartment with one truck and one driver on file. Despite this, the company told customers it was 'a big company with multiple trucks' and had accumulated 768 Yelp reviews. General Manager Aitas Beressov called the dumping embarrassing.

What the outlets missed: Trunk's investigation found that Beressov operates three additional entities from the same Marina Del Rey apartment, including Father and Sons Moving Inc (DOT 3831941), which relocated to a Texas apartment address and runs a 52.4% driver out-of-service rate, nearly 10 times the national average. VIP Pro Moving is classified as NOT AUTHORIZED for interstate moves. Its website advertises them anyway.

What happened after: No enforcement action from FMCSA is documented in federal records. The company continues to operate. Father and Sons Moving continues to hold active interstate authority. The dumping incident cost the company nothing in regulatory consequence.

On August 3, 2022, a security camera in a Santa Ana apartment complex recorded two employees of Pro Movers Inc unloading old couches and mattresses into a residential alley. When confronted by a resident, one of the men laughed. ABC7 aired the footage.

What ABC7 found: Pro Movers Inc General Manager John Romero called the dumping embarrassing and said it violated company practices. The Santa Ana Police Department issued a $100 citation.

What the follow-up showed: Three years after ABC7's coverage, Pro Movers Inc (USDOT 2211293) remains active out of Orange County with eight trucks, a BBB F rating, and a website that advertises cross-country interstate moves it is not federally authorized to perform. Its FMCSA record shows 'Intrastate Only, NOT AUTHORIZED.' A related entity at the same Anaheim address, Pro Moving & Storage LLC (DOT 3243696), has a 40% driver out-of-service rate.

Consumer complaints document stolen items, a driver who abandoned a truck with a customer's belongings in an Arizona wash for three days, $11,600 moves where every piece of furniture arrived destroyed, and settlement offers conditioned on the customer agreeing not to post negative reviews.

What happened after: BBB accredited the company on March 17, 2025, despite the documented F rating and complaint pattern. FMCSA has not initiated documented enforcement action. The company continues to advertise interstate services it is not authorized to perform.

In November 2021, CBS Los Angeles reported that Gold Standard Moving and Storage, a Florida-based moving broker, was under criminal investigation after dozens of families lost their belongings. The actual carrier doing the moves was East Freight Logistics, an unlicensed company registered at a private home in Jacksonville that was actually operating out of Portland, Oregon.

What the stations found: Consumers across multiple states hired Gold Standard (USDOT 3422711, Pompano Beach, FL) for cross-country moves. Their goods were handed to East Freight Logistics, which transported them to Oregon and stopped communicating. FBI Special Agent Kieran Ramsey obtained a warrant for a 30,000-square-foot warehouse in Salem, Oregon. Inside: 450 pallets of belongings from more than 300 victims. East Freight had generated 93 DOT complaints in 2021 alone.

What the investigation uncovered: Gold Standard was not one company. It ran a single call center under eight different names, including Executive Van Lines, Imperial Moving Group, National American Van Lines, Razor Van Lines, Simple Path Moving, Spartan Moving and Storage, United American Moving, and Us Pro Moving and Logistics. When one name accumulated too many bad reviews, they rotated to the next.

The operators were Charles Gordon Abrams, Daniel J. Metz, and Rudolph Logan Rice. The Florida AG filed civil complaints against them in December 2022 in coordination with the DOT Office of Inspector General.

What happened after: Final judgments came down on March 6, 2025. Gold Standard was ordered to pay $3,019,000 in restitution and civil penalties. Abrams, Metz, and Rice received lifetime bans from the moving industry. East Freight was dissolved in September 2022. This is one of the largest moving fraud resolutions on record, but it took four years from initial news coverage to final judgment.

In July 2026, Military.com published a profile titled 'Lucky Coincidence: Moving Brokerage CEO Takes Pride in Military Family Relocation.' The piece featured Safe Ship Moving Services CEO Roger Vance, who claimed Safe Ship has handled over 100,000 family relocations since 2020, uses a 'proprietary AI system analyzing 20 metrics' to match families with movers, and donates 10% of proceeds to charity.

What the article did not mention: Safe Ship (DOT 3475743, Boca Raton, FL) is the most-complained moving company in the FMCSA database, with 404 NCCDB complaints across two DOT numbers controlled by Vance. It holds an F rating from the BBB.

Trunk's cross-reference of Safe Ship's published carrier list (1,080 carriers) against FMCSA records found that 100 carriers on the list have revoked or inactive authority. The combined complaint count across carriers on Safe Ship's list is 2,954. One of those carriers, Ver Vanlines (DOT 4390489), received its operating authority on May 23, 2025, was not incorporated as an LLC until June 10, 2025, seventeen days after receiving federal authority, and had zero operating history. Safe Ship dispatched an active-duty Navy officer's household goods to Ver Vanlines. They were never delivered. Ver's authority was revoked November 10, 2025.

What happened after: The Navy officer, Ke Wang, filed suit against Safe Ship in Palm Beach County (Case No. 502025CA012956XXXAMB). The Second Amended Complaint, filed August 10, 2026, names Trunk's investigation as Exhibit H. As of this writing, Coastal Moving Services and Safe Ship continue to operate. In August 2026, two industry sources confirmed that Safe Ship's CEO Roger Vance purchased a 51% stake in BLVD Moving and Storage (DOT 2892909), California's third most-complained carrier, with 33 trucks and 57 complaints trending up 27% year-over-year.

KMBC 9 investigative reporter Matt Flener published a series on Howards Vanlines and the Sherwood Lane carrier cluster after multiple consumers in the Kansas City metro reported hostage loads and missing belongings. The pattern KMBC documented: consumers in Missouri and Kansas book long-distance moves through online platforms, Howards Vanlines or a connected company is dispatched, the carrier loads the goods and drives east, and then demands a significantly higher price before delivery.

Multiple consumers independently tracked their belongings using AirTags and Apple devices packed in shipments. The signals led to 30 Sherwood Lane, Fairfield, New Jersey, a commercial warehouse that serves as the registered address or operational hub for at least five household goods companies with a combined 316+ NCCDB complaints.

What KMBC found: The Sherwood Lane cluster includes Moving Systems (DBA Noble Moving & Storage, 145 NCCDB complaints), Space Moving Vanlines, Four Seasons Movers, and Premiere Moving & Storage. Howards Vanlines, registered at a different address, is operationally connected. The Independence, Missouri Police Department investigated multiple complaints and referred the case to the FBI. A federal investigation was confirmed by ABC7.

The DBA structure is significant. Moving Systems operates as Noble Moving & Storage. A consumer searching FMCSA for 'Noble Moving' will not find the 145 complaints filed under 'Moving Systems.' The complaint history is hidden behind the trade name.

ABC7 New York reported that after Howards started receiving media attention, a new entity, Choice Vanlines Inc (DOT 4528356, Saddle Brook, NJ), appeared and accumulated 12 complaints within weeks. When consumers emailed Choice Vanlines for customer service, responses came from Howards email addresses and, in at least one case, from Noble/Moving Systems. Same operation, new front.

ABC7 also reported that Farah Al-Ibrahim, a convicted wire fraud conspirator connected to the Sherwood Lane network, was 'wiping everything clean' after the reporting intensified.

In August 2026, KMBC's Flener shared a photo of an eviction notice posted on a Kansas warehouse door at 501 Olive Street, Leavenworth. The notice was addressed to Logistic Moving Services LLC, whose Tucker, Georgia address is the same building where Handle With Care Moving and Transportation LLC (147 complaints, authority revoked March 2026) had operated.

The landlord of 501 Olive Street, Kelly Cline, submitted a complaint directly to Trunk. She confirmed multiple property owners had traced GPS-tagged belongings to her building and that local police had contacted her multiple times about stolen property. A Leavenworth County court (Case No. LV-2026-LM-001337) issued a default eviction judgment.

What happened after: As of late August 2026, the FBI referral is pending. No federal charges have been filed. The network continues to operate across at least five company names and three warehouse locations in three states.

NJ.com reported that customers of Howards Vanlines were tracking their missing belongings to a warehouse on Sherwood Lane in Fairfield, New Jersey. Ryan and Nicole Gillogly used Find My iPhone on an old device packed with their shipment to trace their belongings to the Sherwood Lane warehouse after moving from Vermont to Kentucky. They estimated they received approximately 70% of their belongings after playing 'hardball' to get them back. Another customer also tracked items to the same location.

This was the first NJ.com coverage of the Sherwood Lane warehouse, adding a major verified New Jersey outlet to the KMBC and ABC7 reporting that had primarily come from Kansas City and New York. The Gillogly case adds Vermont-to-Kentucky as another route funneling through the NJ warehouse corridor.

A Bowling Green man contracted with Menards Moving & Storage ($858, paid by debit card) to move to Nashville, Tennessee. Menards subcontracted to Swift Moving Services. On July 30, 2025, a truck arrived bearing the name Goodview Moving & Storage. Three company names, one move.

The sole employee loaded the truck, then demanded an additional $735 via Cash App mid-move, claiming there were more items than originally agreed. The victim was told the truck would go to Chicago first before delivering to Nashville.

The victim had placed an Apple AirTag in a textbook box. After four days, the AirTag showed the truck in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, not Nashville. Repeated calls to the movers went unanswered. Bowling Green Police contacted Milwaukee PD to check the address. The belongings' location remained unconfirmed as of publication.

This case predates the Menards shutdown rumors by a full year and documents the same pattern seen across the Menards network: consumer books through Menards, a different carrier shows up under a different name, price increases on moving day, cash app payments, belongings diverted to a warehouse in a different state, and the company stops answering calls.

Fox 35 Orlando aired a consumer alert during peak moving season warning viewers about the difference between licensed movers and brokers, and advising what to do when movers hold belongings hostage. The segment was produced with the Better Business Bureau of Central Florida.

Separately, Jeff Rossen (formerly NBC's 'Rossen Reports' on the Today Show) published a segment titled 'Home Moving Scams Are on the Rise, Here's How to Protect Yourself,' covering the same themes for a national audience.

Neither segment named specific companies. Both reflect a shift: the broker-carrier distinction, once an industry inside-baseball topic, is now being explained to general audiences on local and national platforms. The coverage is consumer education rather than investigative reporting, but it signals that moving fraud has crossed from niche to mainstream awareness.

Every investigation above followed the same template: consumers reported harm, a reporter looked up the FMCSA record, the public record confirmed the harm, and local enforcement or litigation followed months or years later.

FMCSA had access to every piece of data these reporters used. The complaint counts, the safety scores, the shell company structures, the shared addresses, the DBA name mismatches that hide complaint histories from consumers searching for their mover. None of this required investigative access. It required looking.

The agency's response to documented fraud has been slow in every case Trunk has tracked. Gold Standard operated from 2020 until 2022 before the AG acted, and until 2025 before final judgment. Pro Movers Inc received a $100 citation and kept advertising unauthorized interstate moves. Howards Vanlines accumulated more than 166 complaints before KMBC's reporting triggered an FBI referral. Safe Ship remains active with 404 complaints and an ongoing pattern of dispatching unvetted carriers to military families.

Local news is filling the enforcement gap because it has an incentive that FMCSA does not: an audience that cares and a deadline that creates urgency. A three-minute segment on a Kansas City ABC affiliate did more to pressure the Sherwood Lane network than years of complaint accumulation in a federal database.

The investigative infrastructure exists. The complaint data is public. The FMCSA SAFER system is accessible to any reporter in any city. The question is not whether the information is available. It is whether anyone with authority is treating it as a reason to act.
