Moving pricing is famously opaque. Companies prefer to quote after seeing your inventory, making comparison shopping difficult and price anchoring easy. We cut through this by collecting verified 2-bedroom move pricing from 55 movers who publish or provided rate cards. The results reveal a market where pricing has almost no standardization.

For a standard 2-bedroom local move, the cheapest verified price in our dataset is $520 and the most expensive is $6,400. That is a 12x difference for ostensibly the same service: moving the contents of a two-bedroom home from one location to another within the same metro area.

The average across all 55 movers is $1,204. But that average is nearly meaningless given the distribution. The range is so wide that a consumer getting one quote has essentially no information about whether they are being charged fairly.

Several factors drive the enormous range. Service level varies dramatically: the $520 quote likely involves a smaller crew, no packing materials, and basic liability coverage. The $6,400 quote may include full-service packing, premium insurance, dedicated trucks, and white-glove handling.

But service level does not explain a 12x difference. Geography, crew size, minimum hour requirements, travel time charges, fuel surcharges, stair fees, long carry fees, and seasonal pricing all stack up. Some movers quote all-inclusive. Others quote a base rate and add fees that can double the final bill.

The consumer who compares only headline rates without understanding what is included is likely to be surprised at delivery.

The data makes one recommendation inescapable: get multiple quotes. With a 12x spread in the market, a single quote provides no reference point. Three quotes from verified, licensed movers give you enough data to identify outliers in both directions.

A quote significantly below $800 for a 2-bedroom move should prompt questions about what is not included. A quote above $2,500 for a local 2-bedroom move should prompt questions about what premium services are driving the price. The middle of the market, roughly $900 to $1,500, is where most legitimate full-service local moves land.

Across our pricing data, the movers who appear on flagged or avoid lists tend to cluster at the low end of initial quotes, then inflate at delivery. This is the classic bait-and-switch pattern: a low estimate gets the booking, and then additional charges appear on moving day when the consumer has no leverage.

Legitimate movers who quote low tend to be transparent about what the quote does and does not include. Dangerous movers who quote low are vague about inclusions and resist putting the quote in writing with a binding estimate.

Trunk consumer reports reveal a consistent pattern of systematic overcharging among flagged movers. The numbers paint a clear picture.

Average quoted price across documented complaints: approximately $4,500. Average actual price charged: approximately $9,800. That is an average overcharge of 146%.

The most common complaint types: bait-and-switch pricing (appearing in over 90% of reports), hostage loads where belongings are held until additional payment is made, and damaged or missing items at delivery.

The South Florida broker corridor accounts for a disproportionate share of complaints. Value Added Moving (Fort Lauderdale), Safe Ship Moving (Boca Raton), Menards Moving (Greenacres), and Safe Shield Moving (Boynton Beach) have a combined 750+ BBB complaints. All operate as brokers with zero trucks.

Every documented case in our complaint database involved a deposit ranging from $1,500 to $4,200 that the mover refused to return after the price was increased. Interstate moves are typically charged by weight or cubic feet. After loading, the truck is weighed to determine line-haul charges.
