Why Each Category Is Restricted

Hazardous materials

Federal law (49 CFR) prohibits moving companies from transporting hazardous materials without a HAZMAT endorsement, which household goods carriers do not carry. A single leaking propane tank or can of gasoline inside an enclosed truck creates explosion and fire risk. Moving trucks reach internal temperatures of 120 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit in summer, which can cause pressurized containers to rupture. Fines for transporting undisclosed hazardous materials range from $250 to $500 per violation for the shipper.

Perishable items

Moving trucks are not refrigerated. Transit times for long-distance moves range from 1 to 21 days, and your shipment may sit in a warehouse for several days before delivery. Food left in moving boxes attracts rodents and insects, which can damage other items in the shipment. Spoiled food can also create mold that spreads to upholstered furniture and clothing. Use up frozen and refrigerated food in the 2 weeks before your move, and donate non-perishables to a local food bank.

High-value items

Under federal regulations, the default liability for movers is released value protection at $0.60 per pound per article. A 2-lb diamond ring worth $15,000 would net you $1.20 in a claim. Even full-value protection (which costs $300 to $800 for a typical move) has per-item caps and deductibles. Movers will not accept responsibility for items whose value far exceeds what their insurance will cover. Transport jewelry, cash, important documents, and collectibles yourself.

Plants and pets

The USDA restricts the interstate transport of plants to prevent the spread of invasive insects and diseases. Each state has its own agricultural regulations, and movers cannot comply with all of them. Animals cannot survive safely in an unventilated moving truck. Temperatures inside the cargo area regularly exceed safe limits for pets. Use a licensed pet transport service ($200 to $2,000 depending on animal size and distance) or drive your pets yourself.

Personal documents and electronics

Passports, Social Security cards, birth certificates, tax returns, and medical records are irreplaceable or extremely difficult to replace. Replacing a passport takes 6 to 8 weeks. Replacing a birth certificate requires contacting the vital records office in the state where you were born. Hard drives and laptops are sensitive to vibration and temperature extremes. Always keep these items in a personal bag that stays with you throughout the move.

State-Specific Restrictions

Beyond the standard prohibited list, certain states enforce additional restrictions at their borders, particularly on agricultural products.

California

Agricultural inspection at border checkpoints. Certain fruits, vegetables, plants, and soil are confiscated. Firewood from out of state is prohibited.

Florida

Citrus plants and soil from citrus-producing areas are banned to prevent citrus greening disease. Pets require a health certificate issued within 30 days.

Arizona

All plants and plant products inspected at ports of entry. Citrus, grapes, and cotton-related materials are heavily restricted.

Hawaii

Strictest regulations in the U.S. All plants, animals, and soil require permits and quarantine. Dogs and cats face a 120-day quarantine unless they meet the 5-Day-Or-Less program requirements.

Texas

Fire ant quarantine zones restrict the movement of soil, hay, and nursery stock from infested counties. Certain exotic animals require permits.

How to Dispose of Prohibited Items

Household hazardous waste (HHW)

Most counties run HHW collection events 2 to 4 times per year or operate permanent drop-off sites. Search "[your county] household hazardous waste" for dates and locations. Common accepted items: paint, motor oil, batteries, cleaning chemicals, pesticides. These services are typically offered at no charge to residents.

Donate usable items

Unopened cleaning supplies, half-full paint cans, and garden chemicals can often be donated to Habitat for Humanity ReStore, community theaters, or school art programs. Sealed, unexpired food goes to food banks. Houseplants can be given to friends, neighbors, or offered on local buy-nothing groups.

Specialty recyclers

Car batteries: any auto parts store (AutoZone, O'Reilly) accepts them for recycling. Propane tanks: many hardware stores and gas stations offer tank exchanges. Electronics: Best Buy accepts most small electronics for recycling. Medications: DEA take-back events or pharmacy drop boxes at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart.

Timeline for disposal

Start identifying and disposing of prohibited items 4 to 6 weeks before your move. HHW events may only happen monthly, so check the schedule early. Plan to use up perishable food in the final 2 weeks. On moving day, you should have zero prohibited items left in your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can movers transport a gun safe?+
Most movers will transport an empty gun safe, but they will not move firearms or ammunition. The safe must be completely empty before loading. Some movers charge extra for safes over 500 lbs due to the specialized equipment needed. Verify with your mover in advance and plan to transport firearms yourself in compliance with federal and state laws.
Will movers take my houseplants?+
Most local movers (under 100 miles) will transport houseplants, but interstate movers almost always refuse them. The USDA regulates the transport of plants across state lines to prevent the spread of pests and diseases. States like California, Arizona, and Florida have especially strict agricultural inspections at their borders. For long-distance moves, consider giving plants to friends or shipping them via a plant shipping service (typically $15 to $50 per plant).
What happens if movers find prohibited items in my boxes?+
If movers discover prohibited items during loading, they will ask you to remove them from the shipment. If prohibited items are found in transit (such as during a weigh station inspection), the mover may unload them at the nearest terminal and charge you for the delay. In the worst case, hazardous materials found in transit can result in fines against the carrier and the shipper. Disclose everything upfront to avoid problems.
Are movers liable if they break a prohibited item I packed myself?+
No. If you pack a prohibited item in a box without disclosing it, the mover has no liability for damage. Full-value protection and released-value coverage both exclude items the mover was not informed about or that violate the prohibited items list in your contract. Always read the bill of lading carefully and disclose your full inventory.
Can I move my car with my household goods?+
No. Moving companies that transport household goods are not licensed to carry vehicles on the same truck. You need a separate auto transport service, which typically costs $700 to $1,500 for open transport and $1,000 to $2,500 for enclosed transport on a cross-country route. Alternatively, you can drive the car yourself or hire a drive-away service ($500 to $1,000 for 1,000+ miles).
Will movers transport my prescription medications?+
Movers will not pack or take responsibility for prescription medications. Medications need temperature control and immediate accessibility, which a moving truck cannot guarantee. Pack all prescriptions in a personal bag you keep with you. Before a long-distance move, request a 90-day supply from your doctor and transfer your prescriptions to a pharmacy in your new area.
Can I ship wine or alcohol with my household goods?+
Most movers refuse alcohol because it is fragile, heavy, temperature sensitive, and regulated differently across state lines. Some states prohibit the import of alcohol by individuals entirely. For valuable wine collections, use a specialized wine shipping service that offers climate-controlled transport. Expect to pay $3 to $8 per bottle for professional wine shipping.
