Room-by-Room Declutter Plan
What to keep, what to sell or donate, and how much weight you can cut from each room. These estimates are based on a typical three-bedroom home.
| Room | Typical Items | Weight Cut |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | 60 to 80 items | 200 to 400 lbs |
| Master bedroom | 40 to 60 items | 150 to 300 lbs |
| Living room | 20 to 35 items | 300 to 600 lbs |
| Garage | 80 to 150 items | 500 to 1,200 lbs |
| Bathroom | 30 to 50 items | 30 to 60 lbs |
Storage Unit Sizing and Costs
If you are moving to a smaller space and need to store overflow items, use this table to estimate the right unit size. Prices reflect national averages. Climate-controlled units cost 20 to 50% more.
| Unit Size | Square Feet | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 5x5 | 25 sq ft | $50 to $100 |
| 5x10 | 50 sq ft | $75 to $150 |
| 10x10 | 100 sq ft | $100 to $200 |
| 10x15 | 150 sq ft | $130 to $250 |
| 10x20 | 200 sq ft | $150 to $300 |
| 10x30 | 300 sq ft | $200 to $400 |
How Downsizing Reduces Moving Costs
Long-distance moves are priced by weight. Local moves are priced by time (fewer items = fewer hours). Here is what you save at each level of decluttering.
| Weight Removed | Local Savings | Long-Distance Savings |
|---|---|---|
| 500 lbs | $100 to $200 | $200 to $500 |
| 1,000 lbs | $200 to $400 | $400 to $1,000 |
| 2,000 lbs | $400 to $700 | $800 to $2,000 |
| 3,000 lbs | $500 to $900 | $1,200 to $3,000 |
| 5,000+ lbs | $700 to $1,200 | $2,000 to $5,000 |
6-Week Declutter Timeline
Week 1: Garage, attic, and basement
Start with the areas you use least. Sort everything into keep, sell, donate, and trash piles. Dispose of hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, batteries) at your local waste facility. Most garages yield 500 to 1,200 lbs of removable weight.
Week 2: Closets and storage areas
Go through every closet in the house. Apply the 12-month rule: if you have not worn it or used it in 12 months, it goes. Bag up clothing donations and schedule a Goodwill or Salvation Army pickup. Shred old documents you no longer need (keep tax returns for 7 years).
Week 3: Kitchen and dining room
Keep one set of everyday dishes (service for 8 is usually enough). Sell or donate duplicate appliances, specialty gadgets used less than twice per year, and mismatched food storage containers. Dispose of expired food and spices.
Week 4: Living room and bedrooms
Measure doorways and rooms at your new home before deciding which furniture to keep. Sell oversized pieces that will not fit. List furniture on Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp early in the week to allow time for buyers.
Week 5: Final pass and remaining sales
Walk through every room one more time. Drop prices on unsold items by 30 to 50%. Schedule a bulk donation pickup for everything that has not sold. Cancel any subscriptions tied to your current address.
Week 6: Pack only what you are keeping
By now, your inventory should be 30 to 50% lighter than when you started. Pack room by room, labeling every box with contents and destination room. Your movers (or rental truck) should now fit a smaller size.
Where to Sell Your Items
Comparison of selling platforms by speed, fees, and effort level. Start listing 4 to 6 weeks before your move for the best results.
| Platform | Sell Time | Fees |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Marketplace | 3 to 7 days | None for local pickup |
| Craigslist | 5 to 14 days | None |
| OfferUp | 3 to 10 days | None for local, 12.9% for shipped |
| Estate sale company | 1 to 2 weekends | 25 to 35% commission |
| Consignment shop | 30 to 90 days | 40 to 60% commission |
