College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving
Strengths
- 4.8/5 from 3,332 Google reviews — very high volume
- National franchise brand recognition
- Junk removal and donation pickup capability
- Piano moving capability
- Some genuinely positive experiences — repeat customers exist
- Owner responds to Google reviews (though often with template apologies)
Red Flags
- BBB F rating with 20 complaints — 16 UNANSWERED. Second-highest complaint volume of any DMV mover profiled
- BBB customer reviews average 1/5 — sharply contrasts Google 4.8
- Insurance claims completely ignored — multiple reviewers paid for coverage, filed claims, received zero response for months/10+ months
- Claim system described as nonexistent — 'the claim system doesn't exist'
- Corporate and franchise pass the buck — corporate says contact franchise, franchise doesn't respond, customers stuck in loop
- Movers smelled of marijuana — reviewer describes one as 'useless'
- Forced to pay before unloading — hostage pattern
- 4+ hours late to scheduled appointments — 8 AM appointment, movers arrived 12:30 PM
- Threatened to leave belongings in truck when price was questioned
- Approximately 75 of 80 boxes packed improperly — inadequate protection, thrown in boxes
- Franchise model obscures accountability — national brand recognition but locally owned with no oversight
- $99 deposit refund took 3 months of calling 15+ times
- Items left behind — customers forced to return to pack and move remaining items themselves
- 6-step damage claim runaround documented by reviewer — 10+ days waiting with no resolution
- Donated items never delivered to charity, management unresponsive (Teri Banegas, Nextdoor)

“I had good luck with College Hunks from their Rockville location when I moved 3 months ago. It was $150 an hour plus mileage and other fees so it was about $1,000. I moved an entire apartment about 10 miles away from where I previously lived and the move went very smoothly. Two guys moved everything and they were courteous and professional.”

“Their pricing is predatory. I ended up being charged more >1600 for a trucks worth of junk but more than that they damaged the property and refused to pay for the repairs or refund me. The movers were also not what anyone would refer to as a hunk.”

| 5/5 | I booked a donation pickup / junk removal service with College Hunks in Washington, DC. It was an excellent experience from start to finish. The booking was quick and easy to make, and although I received one or two phone calls and texts from sales reps, they were not pushy in the slightest and answered all my questions. | Jacqueline Cremata | |

| 1/5 | Several of my items were completely damaged. One of the hunks smelled of weed and was useless. Move took twice the time. I have never received such poor service in my life. I saw my food items literally rolling in the parking lot because these people were so incredibly incompetent. Two of the items damaged cost more than the entire amount of the move. No refund, no insurance, do not care. | M Moore | |
| 1/5 | Honestly, I can't recommend these guys. I've used movers for much bigger, more complicated moves and this was probably the worst moving experience I've ever had. Only 2 guys showed up with the smaller option of truck. By 2pm my wife and I decided to pay them and cut our losses. We called corporate and the local office FOUR TIMES and were assured that a solution was in the works. Nobody ever called back. | stephen kupsha | |
| 1/5 | I paid extra for the insurance to ensure I could file a claim if something like this happened. Well, the claim system doesn't exist. The movers also failed to take two of my dumbbells off the truck. I haven't talked to someone on the local office about my claim. Corporate emailed back and said the local chain will email me or call me next day. Do you think that happened? No. | Blake Lajiness | |
| 1/5 | UPDATE: I have reached out to this company multiple times in several different ways over the last 10 months. I have never received a response. I paid for their increased insurance coverage in case of damages during the move, and the movers broke my bed frame. Since then, I've reached out multiple times to request reimbursement, and the company has completely ignored me. No response, no accountability, and no resolution. This company is unprofessional and fraudulent. | Alyssa | |
| 1/5 | Had College Hunks move donated 4-bedroom items to Wider Circles but they never arrived. Spoke with manager, they gave me the run around and to this day I've not hear from them. They stole all my donations. Charged $800+ not including tip. Would not recommend at all. | Teri Banegas | Nextdoor |
