How to Get Your Company to Pay for Your Move

Most companies will cover some or all of your moving costs if you ask. Here is what to request, when to ask, and the exact language to use.

When to Ask (Timing Is Everything)

Ask BEFORE you accept the offer. This is the single most important thing in this article.

Once you say yes, your leverage drops to zero. The company already has what they want: your commitment. The negotiation window is between the verbal offer and the signed offer letter. That is when you have maximum power.

The conversation should happen during the same call or email thread where you discuss compensation. Relocation is a line item in the total comp package, just like salary, equity, and signing bonus. Treat it that way.

If you have already accepted and did not ask, you are not completely out of luck. Some companies have standard relocation policies that HR can still apply. But you will get the default package, not a negotiated one.

What to Ask For

Most people only think to ask about moving expense reimbursement. That is one of six or seven benefits you can request. Companies expect you to ask for relocation support. It is not awkward. It is not greedy. It is standard.

The most commonly granted benefit is a lump sum relocation payment ($3K to $15K depending on company size and your level). Temporary housing is the second easiest to get, especially if you frame it as "I need time to find the right place so I can focus on ramping up quickly."

Lease break reimbursement is underutilized. If you are locked into a lease, most companies will cover the early termination fee. But you have to ask. They will not volunteer it.

The Exact Script

Here is what to say, whether on a call with the recruiter or in an email:

"I'm excited about the offer. Before I sign, I wanted to ask about relocation support. I'll be moving from [city] to [city] for this role. Is there a relocation package available, or flexibility to include moving expense reimbursement?"

That is it. Simple, professional, non-aggressive. The recruiter will either say "yes, here is what we offer" or "let me check with the hiring manager." Both are good outcomes.

If they say no initially, follow up with: "I understand there may not be a formal policy. Would it be possible to include a one-time relocation stipend as part of the signing bonus?" This reframes the ask and gives them a different budget to pull from.

Company Tiers: What to Expect

What you get depends heavily on the type of company. Big tech companies have formal relocation programs with fixed packages by level. Startups are more flexible but often have less to give. Non-tech corporations vary wildly, but many have policies that HR can apply if you simply ask.

The key insight: at companies with formal programs, negotiation is limited but the baseline is usually decent. At companies without formal programs, everything is negotiable because they are making it up as they go.

Tax Implications (The Part Nobody Mentions)

Since the 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, relocation benefits are taxable income. This means a $10,000 relocation package nets you roughly $6,500 to $7,500 depending on your tax bracket and state.

Some companies "gross up" the payment, meaning they give you extra to cover the tax hit. Most do not. If you are negotiating and have the leverage, ask: "Is the relocation amount grossed up for taxes?"

This matters more than you think. A $10K relocation package in California (with its high state income tax) is worth significantly less than the same package in Texas (no state income tax). Factor this into your decision if you are comparing offers in different states.

What Most People Do Not Know

You can negotiate relocation support for lateral moves and internal transfers, not just new external hires. If your company is asking you to relocate to a different office, they should be covering the cost. Many employees do not realize this is negotiable.

Remote-to-office mandates are especially ripe for negotiation. If the company is ending remote work and requiring you to move to an office city, you have strong ground to request relocation support. You took the job under different terms. The company changed the deal. Frame it that way.

Also worth knowing: some companies will reimburse the cost of breaking a home purchase contract, not just a lease. If you recently bought and need to sell at a loss, ask about a "loss on sale" provision. This is more common in executive packages but worth raising at any level.
